Sefton Central Labour MP Bill Esterson accepts Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness and funding for Motor Neurone Disease Association

Sefton Central Labour MP Bill Esterson braved the ice cold and wet at the weekend when he accepted a dare from Molyneux Ward Labour councillor Tony Carr to take part in the Ice Bucket Challenge.

The Ice Bucket Challenge is an internet phenomenon which has seen people throughout the world drench themselves with a bucket of ice water to raise funds and awareness of Motor Neurone Disease.

Participants who accept the challenge make a donation to the charity and then nominate three others to take part.

After taking part in the challenge, Cllr Carr in turn nominated our MP Bill Esterson for the fundraising freezer.

Bill accepted the challenge and was duly drenched at the hands of wife and Maghull Town Council Labour councillor Caroline and son Phoenixx.

Recovering afterwards with a hot chocolate and a change of clothes, Bill said he was delighted to be able to support such a worthy cause.

Bill said: "The Motor Neurone Disease Association is a fantastic charity that does a fantastic job in funding and promoting research and awareness into the causes of MND, so I was only too happy, if a little apprehensive, to accept Cllr Carr's challenge.

"I think it has been great to see so many people take part in this challenge. While being fun it has raised awareness of MND right around the world and obviously raised vital funds for this charity and many others.

"Caroline and Phoenixx was only too willing to wield the ice water, in fact I think she chilled the water a little too much."

The Ice Bucket Challenge went viral through social media after being launched int he United States in June. Thousands of people have taken part including celebrities such as Harrison Ford and Patrick Stewart as well as politicians in the UK.

Bill encouraged others to support the charity.

Bill said: "Whether you take part in the challenge or not, I encourage everyone to donate to this very worthy cause.

"MND is a life-changing illness and the Motor Neurone Disease Association does excellent work giving support, help and advice to people living with the condition and funding research.

"A great charity that deserves support, with or without the ice bucket."
