Sefton Central Labour MP Bill Esterson met with United Utilities to discuss the recent flooding incidents in Maghull.
Homes in Fouracres were engulfed by rising floodwater during the heavy rainfall at the end of September.
The floods caused havoc as homes had their power cut off.
Bill met with United Utilities which has responsibility for surface water flooding.
Bill said: "I met with United Utilities to highlight some of the main issues which we have experienced in recent weeks in Maghull and throughout Sefton.
"In particular the flooding incidents at Fouracres and Sefton Lane were at the top of the list of issues to be discussed.
"The meeting was constructive and United Utilities agreed to help residents. They agreed with me that the drains have to deal with far more water than they were designed to carry.
"The impact of further development will continue to put pressure on the drains."
United Utilities has to bid for the cash to improve the drains and the government has made big cuts in spending.
Bill said: "United Utilities told me they understand the need to improve the drains but have to bid for funding from the government.
"United Utilities are responsible for drainage of waste water but the drains and sewers can be blocked with silt which builds up in the gullies and surface drains.
"As the government has cut the money to councils, highways departments have had less money to clear gullies and surface drains and this affects United Utilities. We have had more rain in the last few years and this has had a big impact as there is more water to drain but a build up of silt.
"To improve the quality of the drains United Utilities need government help and I shall be raising this point with ministers.
"We are getting more rainfall. This needs to be addressed so that the people of Fouracres don't have to see their homes flooded like this again."
