Sefton Central Labour MP Bill Esterson with Sefton OPERA’s Roy Swainson and Kenyons Lodge residents after chair exercise session.

Sefton Central Labour MP Bill Esterson found out that you can keep fit without even having to leave your chair this week when he joined Lydiate residents for a work out with a difference.

Bill joined a Chair Exercise group session at Kenyons Lodge which was run by Sefton OPERA (Older Persons Enabling Resource & Action).

OPERA run a rolling programme of activities across Sefton, which includes learn to swim group in Formby on Fridays from 9-10am, Chair Exercises Classes in Kenyons Lodge on Fridays  from 11am-12.30pm.

They also run drop in facilities and run music and entertainment events monthly across Sefton.

Bill said OPERA does a fantastic job helping older people to active and engaged.

Bill said: "I met with some of the team who run OPERA and they invited me to come along to join in one of their sessions and meet some of the people who take part.

"I was really impressed by the activities on offer and the advice given.

"Sefton OPERA is a voluntary organisation that specifically delivers a variety of services throughout Sefton and North Merseyside through its teams of volunteers, designed to benefit the health and well-being of local older people.

"As I saw for myself, the activities stimulate the mind and body, which as the team told me, helps to address the significant problem of depression in later years.

"And as I found out for myself, their keep fit sessions are designed to be suitable for people of all fitness levels and abilities."

Bill also had the chance to speak to some of the people who take advantage of the services Sefton OPERA provides.

Bill said: "The people I spoke to during their session at Kenyons Lodge were very enthusiastic about Sefton OPERA. They told me that not only were they getting the chance to keep fit, but they were also able to get out and meet new people, which is something they may not otherwise have been able to do.

"Sefton OPERA is a fantastic organisation and I look forward to continue supporting them in the future.

"And I would encourage all older people to find out more about the services Sefton OPERA offer and what events they are holding near you."
