Bill Esterson and Steve KermodeA Maghull businessman was elected as Labour's Councillor for Park Ward in May 2012.

Cllr Steve Kermode was elected into the Lydiate & Maghull seat with a majority of 882 (53% of the vote).

The Labour Party activist and campaigner has been an active member of the community and a leading member of the Maghull & Lydiate Labour Action Team.

Father of two Cllr Kermode is also a serving Labour councillor on Maghull Town Council.

Cllr Kermode said: "It is a privilege to be given the opportunity to represent Park Ward.

"I came to this area when I was just two. I have raised my two children here and set up my business here. I am a well known Labour Party campaigner and have been working on residents' issues when they've been brought to the attention of the Labour Action Team.

"My priority for Park Ward is to be a strong advocate for the people of Maghull, Lydiate, Sefton Village and Lunt. I feel that I have started this process by the many local campaigns I have led, but much more needs to be done to ensure that the people of Park Ward are getting the representation that they deserve.

"This is a very difficult time for many people in our community, particularly those who work in the public sector who are facing job cuts and pay freezes, as well as the rest of the community who are facing service cuts because of this Tory-Lib Dem government's slash and burn policies.

"Not only are they attacking the people who live in our community, but they are attacking our community itself. The Tory-Lib Dem government's relaxation of the planning laws means that they are kicking open the door to big business developers to come in and build on our valuable greenspace and greenbelt land.

"This is something which I and my Labour colleagues have fought hard against and we will continue to fight to protect our valuable community greenspaces."

Cllr Kermode said his main priority is to make life better for people in Park Ward.

He said: "We have a Conservative-Liberal Democrat government which is making life very difficult for people here in Park Ward. Their failed economic policy has seen youth unemployment rocket since they took control.

"Our young people are being betrayed by this Tory-Lib Dem government which is making cuts which hit young people hard. Education Maintenance Allowance has been axed. University tuition fees have trebled and opportunities for post-16 education or training have been eroded. Life chances are simply being taken away and nothing is being put in to replace them.

"These attacks extend to older people in our community with cuts to the likes of Winter Fuel Allowance and pensions.

"Like so many of this Tory-Lib Dem government's slash and burn policies, it is ordinary people right here who are feeling the brunt of the cuts.

“Ordinary families like yours and mine who are feeling the pain of a Conservative-Liberal Democrat government which is failing.

"Small businesses like my own are struggling because of the policies this government is introducing.

"I will continue to work with our MP Bill Esterson and our local Labour Action Teams to ensure that the people of  Park Ward get the representation on Sefton Council they deserve."
