A Lydiate graduate and Maghull Maths Centre are joining forces again to relaunch Maghull chess club to coincide with the start of the new school year.
Rob Owens has partnered with Mark Wadsworth from the maths centre to set up a weekly after-school chess club for young people.
The pair are relaunching the club again for the start of the new academic year.
Rob, who has a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from from University of Manchester and a Masters Degree in Political Economy, said the club is ideal for young chess players of all levels.
Rob said: "Maghull Chess Club is suitable for young people who want to get involved in chess and have never played before, or young people who are already adept at the game - and everyone in between.
"Right the way through last year, the club proved to be very successful. We had up to 15 young people coming along to each session. Some had never played before, other were challenging Mark and I.
"They all found it very rewarding, and a number of parents even noted that playing chess had resulted in improvements in their children's levels of concentration and even their school work, which is exactly what we were hoping for.
"Chess has been proven to give people an advantage when it comes to their studies, in particular maths."
The club meets each Monday at Maghull Town Hall from 4pm-5.30pm and is free to attend.
Rob said: "Some of the young people who came along last year made some real improvements in their game.
"Now that we are relaunching the club for the new school year, I hope to see them again and many more.
"Chess is a really fun game to play. It can improve your mind and your concentration levels. It can even help you do better at school. And you'll even make some new friends - check mates!"
