Sefton Central Labour MP Bill Esterson has thrown his weight behind a Maghull businesswoman who has just opened her first cosmetics shop, 'Gentle Cosmetics'.
Helen Flynn who lives in Maghull with her husband John and their two children told Bill how she had designed her own range of cosmetics using natural ingredients and how she has taken the bold step of opening a shop after trading online for a number of years.
Helen said: "The online business has been a great success and I have taken orders from a number party organisers who use my products. In recent months people have asked me to supply their shops with my products.
"My orders have come from as far away as Scotland and the online business continues to grow but I wanted to have a shop so that the brand of Gentle can become better known.
"I set up the business four years ago and have designed the products using natural ingredients. Since the shop opened three weeks ago, business has been excellent. “
Helen has opened her first shop in the Wayfarer’s Arcade in Southport.
She said: "I have a small unit in the arcade just by the coffee shop and it is in the perfect location. The size means that the rent is affordable and I now have an excellent opportunity to develop the business without committing myself to too many costs. Trade has been really good especially at weekends and I am looking forward to the summer season.
"The advantage of being in Southport is that visitors come from all over the country and customers who buy from me at the shop can then re-order online. I am always busy preparing online orders while I am in the shop in between serving customers."
Bill Esterson, who is a former small businessman, said he was impressed by the business that Helen had developed.
Bill said: “Helen has clearly planned her business very carefully. Our sons are in the same class at school in Maghull so Helen has been telling me all about her plans over the last few years when we have been waiting for school to finish. I knew that she was building the business carefully online and she told me how she learned from the mistakes that everyone in business makes. I know from personal experience just what she means by that as well.
"Helen has clearly worked out how to make Gentle Cosmetics a success and my wife and daughter are looking forward to trying out some of the Gentle products which I bought from Helen at her shop. These include a chocolate face mask and a number of different soaps. My daughter was especially pleased with the bubble gum soap.
“I am always thrilled to see someone build a business and it is especially pleasing to see the way Helen has planned so carefully. It can be tempting when starting a business to rush into things and overlook essential elements especially the true cost and it looks to me like Helen has given herself the best possible chance of building a very good business indeed.
"Good luck to Helen and to Gentle Cosmetics and I would urge everyone to take a look at her website or visit her shop in Southport."
