SINCE the election, many of you have been kind enough to pass on your good wishes to my family and to me. Thank you for those good wishes.
During the election I said that one of my priorities would be to keep in touch with you and your families, to listen to what you have to say and campaign on your behalf on the issues which matter most to you and to your family. That’s why we have been out knocking on doors since the election and are delivering a leaflet to every household in Sefton Central with my contact details on it so you can contact me if you need to.
Already, a number of you have asked for help and my team have been doing what they can. Many of you are concerned about what will happen with the change of government.
The effect of the new Tory/Lib-Dem coalition government is already becoming clear in Sefton. The Thornton to Switch Island Relief Road has been cancelled, also under threat are the multi-million pound investments in new school buildings at Chesterfield and Crosby High Schools which were due to be put on the same site. Also at risk is the rebuilding of the Royal Hospital.
The new government clearly has different priorities from the old government but I believe most people think it is good to have a degree of continuity and that major projects like the Thornton Relief Road need to happen, especially as they already had the go-ahead.
I will certainly be arguing that point with both Conservative and Lib-Dem ministers over the coming months. We already have a campaign running to rescue the Thornton Relief Road and if you would like to support this campaign, you can sign up online at www.billesterson.org.uk
We face an interesting summer in politics, a new coalition government on one side and the election of a new leader of the Labour Party on the other. I think we have some excellent candidates who would lead the party and our country exceptionally well and I would like to hear from you what you would like to see from Labour in the coming months and years.
My party is at its best when it is listening. You can contact me by phoning 0151 531 8433 or by email email@example.com or write to me at 29 Liverpool Road North Maghull Liverpool, L31 2HB.
