Maghull Labour councillors see the bigger picture as they join Maghull Jigsaw Club

Maghull Labour councillors, Cllr Patrick McKinley and Cllr Lynn Gatherer with Maghull Jigsaw Club organiser Rita Addison and members Albert Brady and Jackie McCouid.

Maghull Labour councillors are well known for putting the pieces together to look at the bigger picture - and they got to do just that when they went along to Maghull Jigsaw Club last week.

Sudell Ward Labour councillors Lynn Gatherer and Patrick McKinley called in to the club at Maghull Methodist Church.

Meeting each Tuesday morning from 10am-12noon, the club gives people the opportunity to pop in and pick up a jigsaw - absolutely free.

You don't have to be a member and there are hundreds of jigsaws to choose from.

Club organiser Rita Addison said: "We've been running the Maghull Jigsaw Club for years and it is has always proven very popular. It is a nice hobby to have particularly in the winter.

"It's surprising just how many people use jigsaw puzzles. There are people of all ages who come along. my grandson loves jigsaws and he is in his teens. It teaches you patience and that can be an invaluable skill to have.

"We moved from Maghull Library not so long ago, but Maghull Methodist Church has allowed us to use a room here every Tuesday from 10am-12noon.

"So please come along and pick up a puzzle. Everyone is welcome."

Maghull Labour councillor Lynn Gatherer said there were scientifically proven benefits of doing jigsaw puzzles.

Cllr Gaterer said: "There are benefits for all ages doing jigsaw puzzles. Pre-schoolers are proven to benefit as they help in early childhood development. Older people benefit because the keep the brain active.

"It's a great pastime for everyone in terms of teaching you problem-solving strategies, project management skills, self-management skills, visual skills ... I could go on, but what is clear is that experts all agree that people gain a lot from sitting down and tackling a jigsaw.

"We are very lucky here in Maghull that we've got Rita running this jigsaw club and providing puzzles free of charge to anyone who wants them."

Fellow Labour councillor Patrick McKinley agreed.

Cllr McKinley said: "What a great free club which is part of our community here in Maghull.

"Maghull Jigsaw Club is an organisation which is run for the benefit of the rest of the community. It's great that they have been running for so many years.

"But they do always need new jigsaws, so if anyone has any that they would like to donate, or if you would like to go along and borrow a puzzle yourself, just pop along to Maghull Methodist Church between 10am and 12noon each and every Tuesday."
