Maghull Town Council Labour Councillor says Lib Dems are playing

Sandra Williams

A Labour councillor on Maghull Town Council said the Lib Dems should be ashamed of themselves for playing games with council tax payers' money and running up huge debts.

The Lib-Dems ran Maghull Town Council until last May's local elections when Labour took over for the first time. Just before those elections, the Lib-Dems signed contracts committing the council to spend a fortune on a new roof for the Town Hall. The Lib-Dems also increased the Maghull council tax during the 20 years they were in power.

Cllr Sandra Williams, who is the town council's Finance Committee chair also served as a Labour councillor on Maghull Town Councillor from 1995-1999.

Labour now has 13 of the 16 seats on the council with the Lib Dems having just three.

But Cllr Williams said in all the time the Liberal Democrats were in control, not once did they lower the council tax precept.

She said this was just another example of the Liberal Democrats "promising much, but delivering nothing".

Cllr Williams said: "Throughout my time on the council in the 1990s I called for the Liberal Democrats to reconsider how they were doing things and to reassess the budget so that we could look at a cut in the council tax precept.

"But because the Lib Dems were in full control with the vast majority of seats, my calls fell on deaf ears.

"So now they are no longer in control, for the first time they are suggesting slashing the precept. This is just another example of broken promises from the Lib Dems. Remember tuition fees? Remember the privatisation of the NHS?"

Cllr Williams said the Lib Dems' budget proposals were clearly uncosted and would jeopardise the council's future.

Cllr Williams said: "By the look of it, the Lib Dems drew up their budget on the back of a piece of paper while on the bus on the way to the council meeting. It was ridiculous.

"If they really wanted to cut the precept, they would have done so in the 20 or so years that they were in control. They didn't back then and they would not do so now if they were still in charge.

"Instead, what they did do, was allow costs at Maghull Town Council to run out of control over those 20 years and saddle all of us council tax payers with hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of debt for a roof refurbishment which wasn't needed in the first place.

"This is how the Lib Dems have managed Maghull Town Council's finances over the years and it is now up to us to sort that mess out, which is exactly what we are doing.

"The Lib Dems should be ashamed of themselves for the mess they left behind at Maghull Town Council and tell the truth about the way they wasted money when they were in charge."
