Maghull Town Council by-election results: Labour scores hat-tric

Maghull Town Council's new Labour Councillors Dave Jones, Joan Deegan and John Jarvis.

Labour scored a hat-trick on Maghull Town Council when all three of the party's candidates stormed to victory in last week's by-election.

Labour's Joan Deegan, Dave Jones and John Jarvis scored a clean sweep in last Thursday's election.

The results for the Maghull Town Council North Ward by-election were:

Joan Deegan - Labour - 514
Dave Jones - Labour - 509
John Jarvis - Labour - 499
Lib Dem - 410
Lib Dem - 398
Lib Dem - 391
Green - 66
Turnout - 20.51%

Speaking after the by-election count at Maghull Town Hall, the town's three newest Labour Councillors said the result was a clear message of support for Labour and a rejection of the Lib Dem's lies.

Cllr Joan Deegan said: "This is a fantastic result for Labour. It sends a clear message to the Liberal Democrats that the people of Maghull are not fooled by the lies and misinformation in their leaflets.

"I have lived in Maghull for 42 years. I care about Maghull and becoming a Labour Councillor on Maghull Town Council gives me the opportunity to give something back and contribute to our community.

"Issues which I would like Maghull Town Council to tackle are providing help for the young, the unemployed and the elderly.

"I would also like to see a real emphasis on regenerating Maghull's retail outlets to provide shopping facilities we can all be proud of.

"We have an opportunity here in Maghull because of the town council to make a real difference. I am proud to be able to contribute to that."

Cllr Dave Jones said: "We've got lots of great facilities here in Maghull, as a new Labour Councillor on Maghull Town Council, I will be helping my Labour colleagues to improve those facilities for the whole community - a town which I live and work in.

"Through my work with Maghull Football Club, I have seen how young people can get involved in sports and activities. With Maghull FC we have 250 young people involved in the club. This is something Maghull Town Council can learn from and I would like to see the council work more closely with the town's young people.

"As a Maghull Town Councillor, I will look at how we can provide more facilities for the young and get more young people active.

"I will highlight the positives of living here in Maghull, unlike the Lib Dems who are taking every opportunity to run our town down. That's what Maghull Town Council is there for and what I will work to achieve."

Cllr John Jarvis said: "I have lived in Maghull and Lydiate since I was 10. I just love living in this area. It's a great community.

"Since Labour took control of the town council two years ago they have taken great strides in making improvements in the town for all of the residents who live here.

"In my role as one of the new Labour Councillors on Maghull Town Council, I will be contributing to that good work and I have lots of ideas which I'd like to take forward through the town council, such as making Maghull a market town and looking at allotment provision so people can get active and also during these austere times, grow their own vegetables.

"Maghull is where I live, it is where my friends live, it is where I'm bringing up my family. It is where I belong. I and my Labour colleagues on Maghull Town Council will continue to work hard to continue making the improvements which the people of Maghull deserve."
