Maghull Labour MP Bill Esterson arranges meeting Central Square

Sefton Central Labour MP Bill Esterson has arranged to meet with Central Square owners The Maghull Group to discuss shop keepers' concerns for the future of the town centre.

The week after shop keepers themselves launched the Support Our Shops campaign, the Labour MP has arranged the meeting with the company.

Bill met with representatives of The Maghull Group last summer to hear plans for the square which included demolition of the rear parade of shops to be replaced by a new set of retail units while the other buildings in the shopping centre were to be given a facelift. An additional 30 parking spaces were also to be created and the rest of the areas landscaped.

Following his meeting with shop keepers during the launch of the Support Our Shops campaign, Bill heard concerns about the future of the regeneration of the shopping centre.

Bill said: "The shopkeepers I spoke to do want to see the square and shops on Westway given a much needed revamp.

"The Maghull Group clearly have an interest in investing in the shopping centre and attracting more people back into the square to do their shopping.

"That's just what the shopkeepers want and what most people in Maghull and Lydiate want too."

Bill said the shopkeepers have some fantastic ideas on how to increase footfall in the square.

Bill said: "The shopkeepers themselves have some fantastic ideas for Central Square shopping centre. This includes capitalising on the Frank Hornby name for the benefit of the town.

"Fantastic ideas which will be a draw to our town centre.

"Our local high streets are really finding things difficult at the moment. Many are seeing fewer people come through their doors because people generally have less money to spend. Add that to the increase in out of town shopping and also internet shopping, then our town centres need all the help they can get to draw people in.

"We need to do all we can to save our local shopping centres. Where possible, people should shop locally and support our local businesses who do a vital job in keeping our town centres alive.

"We are lucky in Maghull. We have some fantastic local shops which employ local people. These shops deserve our support and my family and I always try to shop locally.

"I will be raising all of the concerns and all of the ideas which the shop keepers have during my meeting with The Maghull Group and I will do all I can to support this campaign and once again make Central Square the hub of our town."
