Maghull & Lydiate Labour Action Team works to get damaged canal-

Steve Kermode

Maghull & Lydiate Labour Action Team is working with residents who have taken offence at a dilapidated fence on Kildale Close.

Residents contacted Labour Action Team's Steve Kermode who is also a Labour Councillor on Maghull Town Council asking him to help find out who is responsible for the fence which is close to the canal toe path.

Cllr Kermode has contacted Sefton Council try to find out who is responsible so swift action can be taken.

Cllr Kermode said: "I have been contacted by residents who have raised concerns about the fence separating Kildale Close from the canal tow path.

"They have told me that the fence has been damaged for some time and that residents themselves have not been able to identify the department responsible for its maintenance.

"So I have now contacted Sefton Council personally asking for a definite answer as to who owns this land and who is responsible for the fence so we can get the improvements made."

Steve KermodeCllr Kermode said the residents' difficulty in finding out who is responsible for the fence highlights a problem of "bureaucracy and red tape".

Cllr Kermode said: "It should not be this difficult for residents to find out who is meant to maintain a fence on a public right of way and who is legally responsible.

"In this case, this fence could be the responsibility of the council, the Highways Agency or British Waterways.

"Once I receive an answer from Sefton Council I will ask that the problem is addressed."
