Lydiate Parish Council’s Labour vice chairman Cllr Andy Wilson calls for community to come together to urge Arriva to save historic 311 bus service

"Save the 311!"  That is the message from Lydiate Parish Council's Labour vice chairman Cllr Andy Wilson this week.

Cllr Wilson said the termination of the 311 bus is like axing a Lydiate institution.

Arriva has announced the axing of the bus. But many people in Lydiate rely on the service to get to and from Ormskirk.

Cllr Wilson, who is born and bred in Lydiate, said the bus was a historic part of this community.

Cllr Wilson said: "It really is appalling that the 311 is to be axed. The 311 has been going for well over 50 years travelling to and from Liverpool and Ormskirk, passing through Lydiate en route and therefore serving as a vital public transport link.

"When I was a child, I, and my friends, used to travel to Ormskirk to go to the baths there. It was also well used on market days for Ormskirk.

"It stopped at the Ribble garage in Ormskirk and also the Ribble garage in Aintree before it ended up in town at Skelhorne Street depot.

"It is no exaggeration to say that the 311 bus service is bit of an institution and it should not be axed."

Arriva say the bus will be withdrawn from August 30.

But Cllr Wilson is urging everyone in Lydiate and Maghull to write to Arriva to call on them to reverse their decision and save the 311.

Cllr Wilson said: "Arriva have made this decision for financial reasons. Merseytravel are not in a position to help because of government cuts.

"So we as a community need to stand together and lobby Arriva and Merseytravel directly to save the 311.

"Lydiate is a rural community. We rely on public transport. Our residents rely on public transport - young and old. That is why I am asking everyone to write to Arriva to urge them to reconsider.

"The 311 is part of our community and it is part of our history. I don't want to see it consigned to history and that is the view shared by a great many people in this community.

"Please write to Arriva and write to Merseytravel. Save the 311."
