Labour MP says latest cuts to Merseyside Fire Service show ' fla

Bill Esterson

Sefton Central Labour MP Bill Esterson said the latest cuts to Merseyside Fire Service were just another example of how this Tory-Lib Dem Government had a "flagrant disregard for public safety in the North West".

Bill said: "In recent weeks we are hearing just how our emergency services in Merseyside are being hit by the Conservative-Liberal Democrat cuts.

"Our excellent emergency services save lives day in, day out. They are the people we turn to when we are most in need of help. But the Tories and Lib Dems seem intent on eroding that.

"Lots of people have fought long and hard to save Crosby's second pump, but that means nothing when the only thing the government is interested in is saving money.

"The Fire Authority and the Police Authority, like Sefton Council, are being put in an impossible position of having to manage cuts which are being imposed by central government. Cuts which will mean a reduction in service - a reduction which the Labour Party is arguing which could very well cost lives.

"So together with the axing of the coastguard station, we are facing losing our police force helicopter, the potential closure of public desks at our police stations and now a reduction in fire fighters at our fire stations.

"The North West, Merseyside and particularly Sefton have been hit the hardest by this government's cuts agenda.

"That is why the people of this community need to continue to fight against these cuts. By working together we can highlight the Tory-Lib Dem government's flagrant disregard for public safety in the North West.

"A disregard which will end up costing lives."
