Sefton Central Labour MP Bill Esterson launched a pledge card this week in which he called on the Tory-Lib Dem Government to follow Labour's lead and take action now to tackle rocketing gas and electricity bills.
Members of the Labour Action Teams throughout Sefton have backed the MP's calls for David Cameron and Nick Clegg to take immediate action to help the thousands of old people here in Sefton Central who will struggle to cope with huge increases in their household bills.
Bill and the Labour Action Teams are now urging people to fill in their pledge cards to put pressure on the Tories and Lib Dems to stand up for hard pressed families and pensioners instead of the Big Six energy companies.
Bill said: "People want action right now on this issue. They are struggling to pay the spiralling price of household fuel bills. There are far too many in our constituency who are having to make the very real decision whether to heat their homes or eat. That is not acceptable.
"But while Labour is standing up for the consumer by pledging to freeze energy bills if we win in 2015, the Tories and Lib Dems are standing up for the energy companies.
"We need a government to fight for the interests of the population, not the interests of the big businesses who are exploiting the consumer with ever increasing bills.
"That's what I, members of the Labour Action Teams and the hundreds of people who have already signed my pledge card are calling for."
Bill is encouraging people to sign up to the campaign to "help hard pressed families and pensioners" and also small local businesses who the MP said are being "crippled by out of control energy costs".
Bill said: "I have meetings throughout Sefton Central with small businesses who have told me the main issues that they face and what threatens their existence.
"One of the biggest threats to the survival of a small business is costs. One of the biggest ongoing costs for small businesses now is electricity and gas.
"There are 4.8million small businesses in this country. They are our biggest source of employment.
"Small businesses are absolutely crucial to our local economy. They are crucial for the local jobs market, for providing jobs for local people from right here in our communities in Sefton Central.
"Too many small businesses are barely scraping by because of the ongoing costs. Too many are having their survival threatened because of the electricity and gas bill rip-off scandal.
"It is for the survival of local jobs, for the survival of local business and for the struggling, hard pressed families and pensioners who aren't able to warm their homes this winter that I am urging as many people as possible to sign up to this campaign to put pressure on David Cameron and Nick Clegg to take action now."
