Sefton Central Labour MP Bill Esterson with Ashworth Cricket Club chairman Richie Hooton, player Michael short, future player three-year-old Sid Short, Rhonda Latham and player Colin Short.

Ashworth Cricket Club will be holding a fun day next Saturday - and Sefton Central Labour MP Bill Esterson will be there to join in the fun.

Bill will be joining members and supporters of the north Maghull club at the event on Park Lane.

Club chairman Richie Hooton and local resident Rhonda Latham are trying to get as many people as possible to go along and enjoy the fun on the day.

Rhonda said: "This is a fantastic community facility and we want more members of the community to come along and use it.

"So we are opening the doors to the club next Saturday and will have a whole host of fun activities for people of all ages to come along and enjoy, including a dog display, morris dancers, a falconer and much more. We are adding activities all the time.

"The club and the community of Beechway and Parkbourn are working in partnership for the interests of the wider community.

"That's why we want to get as many people as possible at the fun day, and enjoying what is a brilliant facility at the heart of our neighbourhood."

Richie said he hoped this will be the next chapter in the club's long history.

He said: "We do have a brilliant facility here at Ashworth, but we want to invest and expand.

"There are plans to create junior teams and really open up the ground and the club house to the community so that other people can come in and use the site. We encourage young people from the surrounding area to come in and give cricket a try. Those that do really enjoy it.

"But we do need to expand and get investment if we are to continue and survive.

"So we want everyone to come along on Saturday, join the fun, see what we have to offer at Ashworth Cricket Club and get involved."

Labour MP Bill Esterson said he was impressed by the facilities at Ashworth Cricket Club.

Bill said: "Ashworth Cricket Club is a well kept secret.

"Tucked away behind the fence you wouldn't know what a great ground they have there.

"I'm a cricket player and supporter myself, so I am delighted that we have another thriving club in our community. I will do all I can to support them with their plans to open up and expand. And I will do all I can to help them set up junior teams over the coming months and years.

"I hope everyone else in the community supports the club and attends Saturday's fun day."

Ashworth Cricket Club fun day will be held on Saturday, September 29 from 1-6pm. The entrance to the club is on Park Lane directly opposite the entrance to Beechway.
