An election is set to take place to fill three council vacancies on Maghull Town Council.

Maghull Town Council Labour Group have welcomed the election which they say will give more people the opportunity to get involved in running the council.

Labour's Cllr Maurice Byrne said he was looking forward to the election.

Cllr Byrne said: "This election is great news for Maghull Town Council.

"It will give us the opportunity to find more committed and dedicated people to join Maghull Town Council and continue the work which Labour has started.

"Since we took control of Maghull Town Council from the Liberal Democrats in 2011, we have worked on dismantling the years and years of incompetency which became inherent in the Lib Dem administration.

"We held a thorough investigation into the workings of the council and came up with some shocking findings which we passed on to independent auditors who in turn slammed the previous Liberal Democrat administration for their control of the council, the decisions they made and the sheer inexplicable waste of hundreds of thousands of pounds of Maghull council tax payers' money.

"We were shocked and disturbed by what we uncovered and since then we have been working on setting up procedures to ensure that there is more transparency at Maghull Town Council and ensuring that not only do we get value for money, but every single penny that is spent is done so with the full knowledge of the people of Maghull.

"Maghull Town Council is looking forward to welcoming the three new councillors once the election has taken place to work with us on continuing to make the improvements that are needed after the years of Lib Dem mismanagement."

Although no date has yet been set for the election, Cllr Byrne said Maghull Town Council Labour Group would continue to work hard for the people of Maghull.

Cllr Byrne said: "Being a Maghull Town Councillor is very rewarding. You don't get any pay or expenses to be a town councillor but you get to contribute to the community of Maghull. If you love where you live as much as I do, that is the reward in itself.

"Some of the things we have worked on include creating apprenticeship places for our young people to get training in everything from engineering to office administration. We've increased support for our community groups and created a new older person's champion who in turn has created a new partnership with Age Concern to ensure that our older people are getting the support they need.

"We have created a new rolling programme of parks improvements and refurbishments and we have really thrown open the doors to the town hall so the people of Maghull can at last use a facility that their council tax pays for.

"These are just a few of the things we are working on, together with ensuring that our parks and gardens are well looked after in Maghull. And we have many more plans for the coming months.

"As well as all this, we are continuing to put the town council in order after the years of Lib Dem mismanagement and waste.

"Being a Maghull Town Councillor is something I would recommend to anyone who wants to help the Labour Group to continue making Maghull a great place to live, work and visit. I look forward to welcoming the new councillors."
