Labour announces there will be no increase in Maghull Town Counc

Steve Kermode

Maghull Town Council's controlling Labour Group has announced it will not be putting up its council tax.

Labour has drawn up a budget which means that Maghull Town Council will not be putting up its share of the council tax bill the people of Maghull have to pay.

Labour took control of Maghull Town Council for the first time at last May's local elections.

Under the Liberal Democrats, the town council precept has increased year on year since 2003.

The year on year increases have been:

2003/04 - £74.30

2004/05 - £77.20

2005/06 - £80.21

2006/07 - £82.61

2007/08 - £84.69

2009/09 - £87.21

2009/10 - £88.85

Despite the Maghull Town Council tax freeze under Labour, there will be no reduction of services.

In the nine months since taking control of the town council, Labour has slashed operational costs by more than £20,000.

Maghull Town Council Amenities Committee chairman, Labour's Cllr Steve Kermode said: “As chairman on the Amenities Committee, I am really excited by our plans to improve services for the people of Maghull and by the fact that we can do this without increasing the amount that residents have to pay.

"From the point we took control of Maghull Town Council last May, my Labour colleagues and I have been determined not to have any increase on the costs of services to our residents.

"This Tory-Lib Dem government is already making life very difficult for people, particularly right here in the North West, so we have therefore worked hard to make savings in how we deliver services, so that we can continue to provide a first rate service at no extra cost to the people of Maghull.

"We have an ambitious programme for the year ahead, which includes a refurbishing our local parks, which our grounds staff has advised can go ahead in the spring.

"But we are doing this without increasing the cost to the already pressed tax payer."

Cllr Kermode said the Liberal Democrats had systematically failed to curtail spending during its years of control of the town council.

Cllr Kermode said: "The Lib Dems allowed spending to run out of control during their many years in charge of Maghull Town Council.

"Just one example of that has been the profligate cost of the town hall roof project which has left the Maghull Council Tax payer with a 25 year bill of £500,000.

"The Labour Group on Maghull Town Council is ensuring that the people of Maghull get value for money from their town council and that the years of Lib Dem waste are over."
