Sefton Central Labour Party welcomed former Cabinet Minister Hilary Benn to its annual dinner on Friday.

Labour members from Formby, Crosby, Hightown, Thornton, Maghull, Lydiate, Aintree and Melling as well as throughout the borough, attended the dinner at Marine AFC stadium.

They had the chance to listen to an after-dinner speech and quiz the former Labour minister.

Hilary Benn served as International Development Secretary from 2003-2007 and Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs from 2007-2010.

Speaking at the dinner, Hilary said: "I am absolutely delighted to have been invited to the Sefton Central annual dinner.

"In the past year, Sefton Central has benefited from getting a Labour MP elected as well as six Labour councillors who are all working hard to improve the communities in which they serve.

"It is this type of work which the Labour Action Team in Sefton is carrying out which is helping residents in the borough at a time when they need help the most.

"Your MP Bill Esterson works tirelessly in Westminster as well as right here in Sefton making sure that the people in this community are represented well in Parliament and their issues are tackled right here in constituency.

"I'd like to thank Bill and the constituency for the invite."

Sefton Central Labour MP Bill Esterson said the dinner had been a huge success.

Bill said: "The annual dinner was a good opportunity for Hilary Benn to join local Labour members as we celebrated a good year of campaigning and battling for residents.

"We saw some excellent results in the elections in May and we are seeing more and more people joining us week after week.

"Our aim is to support residents across Central Sefton as and when they need help and to fight for their interests in Sefton and in Westminster.

"The Tories and Liberal Democrats are making life very difficult for people here in Sefton Central. It is my job, and the job of our Labour councillors to battle on to improve the lives of people in Sefton.

"I'd like to thank Hilary Benn for joining us at our annual dinner."
