Sefton Central Labour MP Bill Esterson is all set to join the latest Viking invasion of Formby.
Bill will be attending the Formby Viking Medieval Market Day on Saturday, October 5, from 10am-5pm.
TV Viking enthusiast Mark Olly and his entourage of Viking and medieval marauders will be leading the invasion.
The invaders will be bringing with them:
- 30 stalls of authentic arts and crafts
- Archery ranges and combat skills demonstrations
- Two authentic Viking longboats
- Living history demonstrations with traditional Viking music
- Hnefatafl - Viking game tournament
- Birds of prey
- A design a shield competition
- Viking story tellers and authors
Mark, together with Leo Kolassa and Formby Books' Tony Higginson are the main organisers of the event.
Tony told Bill: "This will be a great event. We've taken a lot of time getting things together so we can make a real success of the first Formby Viking and Medieval Market Day.
"We have lots of exciting events planned through the day - something for everyone.
"So I hope lots of people come along to support the event and in turn support our fantastic town."
Bill Esterson said he was delighted to see Formby tapping in to its Viking heritage.
Bill said: "Formby is synonymous with the Vikings, being one of their early settlements. Formby is cited in the Domesday Book under its original Viking village name Fornebei.
"So it is great news that the town now celebrates that connection.
"I am looking forward to seeing the living history demonstration and listening to the traditional Viking music. I will also be putting my Hnefatafl skills to the test by taking part in the tournament.
"This will be a great event for Formby which I hope becomes a firm fixture in the town's annual calendar."
Bill, who has been working with local traders, said he hoped that the Formby Viking Medieval Market Day would be a boost for local businesses.
Bill said: "One thing the traders keep telling me is that they would like to see Formby develop a marketing strategy. What better way of developing a strategy than by utilising Formby's rich heritage.
"This event could attract people into Formby from far and wide, which could be a boost for our fantastic local businesses.
"I for one can't wait for the event and I hope to see you there."
