Bill Esterson MP statement on government issuing licences to start fracking: "The government's plan to allow fracking in protected areas including in Formby is a concern shared by many people. The decision was rushed through parliament with no debate and rides roughshod over the views of people in Formby and elsewhere.
"Serious doubts remain about the science of fracking and reliance on fracking means a continuation of our use of fossil fuels.
"The government says it is committed to reducing the effects on climate change and that means it should be cutting back on the use of fossil fuels. The decision to allow fracking in our national parks and in other protected areas, like Formby shows that the government simply does not care about the environment.
"It has made dramatic cuts in the investment in renewable energy at great cost to business and jobs as well and this latest move shows that last week’s support for the climate change talks in Paris was all talk.
"The Tories' actions speak louder than words. They should be investing in green energy for the long term benefit of the climate and the economy. Instead they have betrayed the people of Formby in the short term and everyone else in the long term when it comes to climate change."
