Sefton Central Labour MP Bill Esterson said he was delighted that a Crosby Area Foodbank collection at Formby Tesco store gathered enough food to provide more than 7,000 meals for people in need in the area.
Tesco confirmed this week that the third collection at the Formby store, earlier this month, raised enough for 7,020 meals for local people.
Across the country, the supermarket raised 32,000 shopping trolleys worth of food - the equivalent of 4.3 million meals.
Tesco topped up items donated by customers with a 30% donation themselves.
Bill Esterson said that while he was obviously delighted that so much was raised at the Formby store, he wasn't surprised by the generosity of Formby and Crosby customers.
Bill said: "To raise so much in the space of a two day collection in one store is fantastic and is testament to the generosity of the people of Formby and Crosby.
"Our foodbanks here in Sefton do a fantastic job supporting people who find they can't make ends meet. More and more people are finding themselves struggling to put food on the table. It is a particular concern for older and more vulnerable people and for a significant number of families.
"A shocking statistic reveals that the majority of people are just one or two pay days away from needing a foodbank.
"They are a vital service that is sadly needed by far too many people.
"It is a service I am more than happy to give all the support I can to keep them running and helping people in need right here in Sefton Central.
"And that is never more the case than at this time of year.
"I would like to thank all the people who generously donated and also Tesco Formby for supporting Crosby Area Foodbank and for topping up the amount raised.
"And I would like to thank the volunteers of Crosby Area Foodbank, without whom this service wouldn't exist and lots and lots of people and families right here in Formby and Crobsy would be going hungry. I wish them all a very merry Christmas - they have certainly earned it."
Formby Labour Action Team's Tom Donnelly said he wasn't surprised at the generosity of Formby Tesco customers.
Tom said: "In the time that I was at the collection point in Tesco, there were queues of people lining up to donate bags full of items they had just bought.
"People clearly understand the plight that far too many people are finding themselves in and want to support our brilliant foodbank charities to help those who are in real need.
"The fact that enough food was collected to make up 7,020 meals shows the generosity of the people of Formby - but we knew that anyway."
Tesco head of UK Government Affairs, John Timothy, said the latest collection was the biggest national food collection in the UK.
John told Bill Esterson: "Thanks to the generosity of our customers, staff, and volunteers from the charities, the collection was a fantastic success. When coupled with our 30 per cent top up we collected enough food to provide 7,020 meals to those in need in your constituency this winter.
"For our third collection, we wanted to build on the work we have already done to provide much needed support. I am delighted to confirm that the third collection is now the biggest national food collection in the UK.
"The support we received for the collection from our customers was fantastic, and the charities were delighted to see you show your support.
"We feel it is important that we support those in need in our communities and we will continue to hold two National Food Collections a year. Our next collection will be held at the start of July."
