Sefton Central Labour MP Bill Esterson said figures released this week showing that one in every 116 homes in Sefton are at risk of being repossessed was depressing but not shocking as the Tory-Lib Dem Government's failed policies are hurting people in this borough hard.
Homelessness and housing charity Shelter has revealed this week shocking figures that show the housing repossession crisis that is hitting Sefton and the country as a whole.
Shelter's figures, which are based on court proceedings, reveal that Sefton is ranked 108 out of 325 local authorities across the country for rate of repossessions.
In the period between October 2012 and September 2013 there were 1,018 repossessions in Sefton.
The charity's figures reveal that one in 116 homes in Sefton are at risk of repossession.
Bill Esterson said the figures show how badly this borough has been hit by the disastrous policies of the Tories and Lib Dems.
Bill said: "Shelters' figures show the real human cost of rocketing cost of living and the dire situation far too may people are finding themselves in.
"Repossession is a daily worry for lots of people here in Sefton.
"There are lots of public sector workers here in Sefton who have seen their wages frozen, or in real terms cut. There are more who have found themselves in the dole queue. Many who are long term unemployed with little prospect of finding employment any time soon.
"And in the private sector many jobs are part time or zero hour contracts on low pay.
"These are the harsh realities of life that people here in Sefton are dealing with day in day out under this Tory-Lib Dems Government.
"That is why we need real positive policies from the government to really tackle the problem of the long-term unemployed, the low paid and those struggling to put food on the table.
"Instead we have a Tory-Lib Dem Government who is more interested in providing tax cuts for millionaires at the expense of ordinary hardworking families who are striving to keep a roof over their heads."
Bill applauded Shelter for working to help those people the Tory-Lib Dem Government is leaving behind.
Bill said: "The Tories and Lib Dems in Government are penalising those people in social housing, very often the most vulnerable and poorest in our communities, with the bedroom tax. But even those who live in their own homes aren't immune to the worst effects of this government.
"Cost of living is rocketing. The price of keeping your home warm is astronomical. Food costs have shot up. But the Tories and Lib Dems have slashed welfare. So you've got people, many of them who are in employment but rely on welfare to put food on the table, who are literally on the brink of homelessness.
"Far too many of them are families. Far too many are children who face waking up on Christmas morning homeless.
"It is said this Tory-Lib Dem Government has sent us back to the '80s. I fear this Tory-Lib Dem Government is sending us back to the 1880s."
