The Formby Neighbourhood Plan has given the parish council the opportunity to work very closely with those of you who live in Formby and Little Altcar. The parish took the opportunity to ask for views about the area.
Well done to the council for their approach and well done to Maghull Town Council for holding a similar survey last year.
It is only by asking you what you really think that politicians and other public servants can really understand so that we can represent you better.
In Formby, you told the parish council how much you value the beautiful coast, beach and woodlands. You also said that transport is good as are the schools. Community spirit is highly regarded and Formby people really like the centre of the village especially Chapel Lane.
By and large most of the people who responded said that they liked Formby very much and there is much to like. So it is not surprising that many people are concerned that major development would change the appearance of the village.
Many of you wish to limit the amount of building of new properties and to protect the green belt, all of which is very understandable.
I want the council to revisit its draft plan to see if there are more brownfield sites which are viable as a way of protecting the green belt as like many others, I object to major development of the green belt as far as possible, which means brownfield first and renovation of empty properties plus a regional approach to planning to reduce some of the pressures.
Other issues of concern in Formby include dog fouling and street cleaning as well as parking in town and at the beach.
You support the independent retailers and want business rates cut as well as limits on the numbers of charity shops and betting shops.
I am pushing for a business rate cut if Labour wins the election and will continue to press for a limit on betting shops as my colleagues and I have done in parliament for some time.
The Neighbourhood Plan survey results have given me the chance to write about the very strong attractions of Formby as well as about the concerns.
Once again, I congratulate Formby, Little Altcar, Melling and Maghull for fighting hard for your residents by developing Neighbourhood Plans and putting your communities first and hope that more parish councils will be able to do the same soon.
But to finish talking about the results from Formby. Formby is a great place for those of us who live here and for those of us who visit. Rest assured, I shall continue to do all I can to ensure it remains so.
