Labour MP Bill Esterson: Residents should benefit from any plans

Sefton Central Labour MP Bill Esterson said it was crucial that people in Formby, Hightown and Ince Blundell benefited from plans to build a 'solar farm' just west of the bypass.

The company behind the proposals, Hive Energy, held a public exhibition of their plans this week at Ince Blundell Village Hall, which would see the solar park built on Orrell Hill, between Ince Blundell and Hightown and to the south of Formby.

Hive Energy's proposed site is currently agricultural land.

Bill called on people in and around the three affected communities to share their views about the proposal with him.

Bill said: "People in Formby, Hightown and Ince Blundell must be given every chance to have a say on whether these plans get the go ahead or not. This is their community. But more to the point, the local community must benefit from a development of this nature.

"That is why I am urging people to share their views with me.

"The company has gone out of its way to alleviate fears by giving assurances that much of the land will still be able to be used for grazing sheep and the will not be a negative impact on the area's wildlife. They have also stated the there will be minimum impact on traffic if this proposal is given the green light.

"I want to know about the long term impacts of this on this area. For instance, this government has slashed subsidies for solar energy production. What happens to this site if those subsidies are slashed even further? Will the site be left derelict? What pre-approval agreements are in place to ensure the land is reclaimed if the company decides to move out? But also will the local community have cheaper electricity and will there be improvements for local people paid for out of the profits made from this installation.

"These are the details I need to see and I know other residents have views too."

Bill invited his constituents to share their views with him.

Bill said: "I want people to let me know what they think. The future development of any community needs to be in the hands of the people from that community. Development needs to be done with the people it affects directly, not to them. That is my priority for the people of our area.

"I need to gauge the communities' views on this to ensure that those views are heard and any concerns addressed.

"Please email your views to bill.esterson.mp@parliament.uk or write to my constituency office at 29 Liverpool Road North, Maghull, L31 2HB."
