Maghull & Lydiate Labour Action Team is warning householders throughout East Sefton to be extra vigilant following a spate of lead thefts from roofs.
Residents have reported to the Action Team that they have fallen victim to the nighttime thefts.
Lydiate has been one of the areas specifically targeted by thieves.
The Labour Action Team has reported the thefts to Maghull Neighbourhood Police.
Action Team leader and Maghull Town Councillor Steve Kermode warned residents to be extra vigilant.
Cllr Kermode said: "People from throughout Lydiate reported to the Labour Action Team that either they or their neighbours have fallen victim to lead thieves.
"These criminals are causing thousands of pounds worth of damage to each house targeted. Not only are they taking the lead, but they are leaving behind serious damage which can lead to longer term problems and costs caused by leaks.
"But not only that, the thieves themselves are risking serious injury. It just takes a slip and they could fall 30ft.
"We have told the police about the reports we have received to call for them to take action.
"But again, we do urge people to be extra vigilant and also look out for neighbours' properties."
Cllr Kermode has also received reports that bogus workmen could be preparing the lead during the day for an easier getaway during the evening.
Cllr Kermode said: "There is the suspicion that people masquerading as workmen are removing the clout nails from the lead during the day to make it easier and quieter to remove during the evening.
"These are ruthless operators and are targeting anyone to get their hands on the lead regardless of the damage."
