July 30, 2013 - Bill Esterson's Westminster Diary

Bill Esterson

One of the issues which is raised with me is how can we improve our town centres and how can we help local businesses. We all want to see our town centres as successful as possible and of course if traders do well it means greater prosperity for the community, more jobs and a more pleasant environment.

That is why I have arranged a session at Formby Pool on Thursday, August 1 to hear from traders and from residents about how Formby Village can be improved and how we can make more of what we have available.

One idea is to attract more visitors from outside the area which is why it is so important to make the most of what we have. In Formby, the Pinewoods and the beach are natural attractions and in Crosby we have the iron men and the beach. So there are opportunities to make more of what we have.

Parish and borough councillors will also be attending the event on Thursday and the two councils have a key role to play as well.

Local traders have told me how difficult it is for them and the financial situation means that business is very tough. It looks like the government is not making the progress we need to kick-start the economy so it is vital that the local community takes action to boost our economy and to secure the long-term future of Formby and our other towns and villages.

The Parish Council has taken some important steps to make sure visitors feel welcome. That includes relatively simple steps like replacing some of the Village's street furniture.

Now I am interested in sharing ideas and supporting traders and other residents in carrying through some of those ideas.

We all want the very best for Formby Village.

We want a thriving trading centre for the local businesses. And we want a thriving shopping and cultural centre for the local residents.

Formby Village is a fantastic centre for Formby, but it has the potential to be so much more.

That's what the traders I have spoken to want and what we will look at investigating at Thursday's session.

The work done by the parish council is a start and of course Sefton Council has pledged cash to help each of our town centres so we need to make the most of the opportunity available.

But we also need to make sure that the improvements we make lead to an increase in footfall for the businesses and enhance the offering in the Village.

Please come along and have your say and talk to other local people about how we can make more of what Formby has to offer.

I look forward to hearing lots of ideas from businesses and residents alike on what we can do to make the improvements in the Village that we all want to see.
